Is a sod lawn easier to maintain than a seeded lawn?
A professionally installed sod lawn is a healthy, mature lawn when it is installed. Simply water, mow and fertilize as required and it will stay healthy.
A seed lawn, on the other hand, can require years of nurturing to reach maturity.
Can I have a sod lawn?
Sod can be installed almost anywhere, even where seeding has proved to be difficult or too costly.
Is a sod lawn durable?
Sod is very durable because it establishes itself quickly. In a matter of a few weeks, it is ready for use. Sod is used in parks and golf courses, as well as residential homes and business premises.
Is landscaping a good investment for my property?
Yes, consider the following figures for return on investment:
- Kitchen: 75% to 125% return
- Bath: 80% to 120% return
- Deck: 40% to 70% return
- Pool: 20% to 50% return
- Landscape: 100% to 200% return
How often should I mow?
The rule of thumb is to never remove more than one-third of the grass blades. You will likely have to mow more during times when moisture is plentiful, and less when the weather has been dry. Avoid mowing a parched lawn; it will make a dry lawn even drier.
What do I do with the lawn clippings?
Collecting all of the clippings removes nutrients from the lawn. A mulching mower does a good job of chopping and blowing the clippings into the lawn, where they decompose and release important nutrients back into the soil. With that said, if grass clippings are heavy, remove them to avoid excessive thatch build-up.
How often do I fertilize?
Here is a simple guide you can use:
1. An early application of a balanced nitrogen, phosphate fertilizer at 5 lbs. per 1000 sq. ft.
2. Two or three additional applications per year, a month to six weeks apart, but terminating before September 1.
How often should I water my lawn?
Here is a simple rule you can follow: If you water, do it regularly. Apply an inch every week (including rain) at one sitting on the sprinkler.
Why should I use pesticides on my lawn or garden? What’s wrong with a few weeds?
Pesticides are analogous to the medicines we use to preserve our own health. They help limit the damage that can be caused by insects, weeds and plant diseases.
Through careful and planned use of lawn care products, proper mowing and watering practices, your healthy lawn will offer many benefits:
- Increased property values.
- Reduced allergens and the likelihood of insect bites and stings.
- Less dust and pollen from weeds and grasses.
- Reduced noise in busy urban centers
In addition, a healthy lawn absorbs carbon dioxide and atmospheric pollutants and gives back oxygen.
Always follow manufacturer’s recommendations when applying any weed control product.
